What Expressions of Sympathy Looks Like Around the World

Sympathy is one of those human experiences that transcends borders, but how do we show it?

That’s where things get interesting.

You send flowers. I drop off lasagna. Someone else lights a candle, shares a prayer, or shows up in silence with zero expectations of conversation. Around the world, cultures have developed their own deeply rooted ways of expressing sympathy, and no, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach.

Let’s take a brief tour.

United States

In the U.S., sympathy cards, casseroles, and floral arrangements are the go-tos.

You might hear phrases like “They’re in a better place” or “Let me know if you need anything,” which may or may not be followed up on (hey, we’re trying).

There’s a tendency to want to “fix” grief quickly, which is heartfelt but sometimes misses the mark.

Still, the intention is solid: offer comfort, give space, and bring carbs. Good comfort food helps.

Japan

In Japan, expressions of sympathy are quiet and formal.

It’s customary to bring condolence money (kōden), presented in a specific type of envelope, and say very little. There’s an emphasis on respect and modesty. For example, a bowed head conveys more than words.

Grief is honored in an understated, dignified way, which makes sense in a culture that values harmony and social order.

Mexico

In Mexico, grief and celebration often go hand in hand.

Marigolds, candles, and altars for Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). The grieving process is communal, and remembrance is lively.

Sharing stories, music, and food with loved ones is a way to keep the departed’s memory alive, not hidden away in a box of tissues.

Ghana

Funerals in Ghana are major events with bright colors, music, and big gatherings.

They’re seen as a final celebration of the person’s life and are sometimes held weeks after a death to allow time to plan a proper send-off.

While the grief is real, the event leans toward uplifting rather than somber.

Jewish Tradition

In Jewish mourning customs, the practice of shiva invites friends and family to gather for seven days of remembrance and celebration of a life lived.

Mirrors are covered, meals are brought in, and the focus is on support, not distraction. Sympathy here is structured, intentional, and deeply rooted in community, and expressed with an abundance of food, like deli meats, bagels, salads, and baked goods.

Shivas are the perfect combination of mourning and meals.

No matter where you are in the world, one thing is clear: sympathy is all about connection. Whether spoken, sung, cooked, or silently shared, expressing care in the face of loss is a universal language.

The Ultimate Moving Day Essentials Checklist

Moving day is a mix of excitement, stress, and the sudden realization that you own way more stuff than you thought.

No matter how prepared you feel, the chaos of packing, lifting, and unpacking can leave you exhausted. And let’s not forget about the joys of the movers running late.

That’s why having a moving day survival kit can make all the difference.

Essentials for Keeping Your Energy Up

You’re going to need fuel and saintly patience to power through the day. Keep these essentials on hand:

  • Snacks – Granola bars, trail mix, and fruit provide quick energy without a sugar crash.
  • Water bottles – Staying hydrated is key, especially if you’re lifting boxes and running around.
  • Coffee or energy drinks – If you’re an early riser or pulling a long day, caffeine is your best friend.
  • Easy-to-eat meals – Pre-made sandwiches or wraps will save you from the desperation of eating a stale bagel you found in an old moving box.

Good food makes any stressful situation better.

Tools to Make Moving Smoother

Having the right tools on hand can prevent last-minute scrambling.

  • Box cutter or scissors – You don’t want to wrestle with packing tape all day. Be sure not to leave blades sticking out or else moving day may involve stitches.
  • Packing tape and extra boxes – Because somehow, you’ll always need more.
  • Trash bags – Perfect for last-minute cleanup and tossing out random junk.
  • Basic toolkit – A screwdriver, wrench, and hammer will come in handy for furniture assembly and minor repairs.
  • Measuring tape – Before moving that couch through the doorway, double-check that it fits. Or, make it the movers’ problem.

Personal Care Items

You’ll be sweating, moving, and likely too busy to think about basic comforts. Pack a small bag with:

  • Toiletries – Toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, and face wipes for a quick refresh.
  • Extra clothes – A change of clothes, especially if you’re moving in the summer.
  • Hand sanitizer and wipes – Moving is messy, and you’ll want to keep your hands clean.
  • First aid kit – Because paper cuts from packing tape are inevitable.

Important Documents and Valuables

The last thing you want is to lose important documents in a sea of moving boxes. Keep these with you:

  • ID, wallet, and keys – Sounds obvious, but they’re easy to misplace in the chaos.
  • Lease or home documents – Essential for any last-minute paperwork or confirmations.
  • Phone charger – Your phone is your lifeline for directions, contacts, and emergency takeout orders.
  • Cash – For tipping movers or unexpected expenses.

A Sense of Humor and Patience

Moving day is unpredictable, and something will go wrong. Work emergencies, extended family drama, and crappy weather have a knack for rearing their ugly heads when you need them least. So, be okay with hiccups.

Soldiering on (and stashing chocolate) will help you get through the day without losing your mind.

📦 SHAMELESS PLUG ALERT 📦

Champagne vs. Sparkling Wine: What’s the Real Difference?

When it comes to celebrations, few things say “luxury” quite like a glass of something bubbly.

But before you pop the cork—which you should always do facing the bottle AWAY from your face—let’s clear up one of the most common misconceptions in the world of wine: Champagne and sparkling wine are not the same thing.

While both feature delightful effervescence, their differences lie in everything from origin to production methods.

Let’s break it down so you can sip with confidence at your next soirée.

Champagne: The Prestige Pick

Champagne can only come from the Champagne region of France.

The strict regulations set by the Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC) ensure that only sparkling wines produced in this northern French region, following traditional methods, earn the right to be called Champagne.

Don’t call it by another name…or else!

Production Process

Champagne is made using the Méthode Champenoise, also known as the Traditional Method.

This process involves a second fermentation in the bottle, which creates those iconic tiny, persistent bubbles that will make you sneeze if you give them a giant breath through your nose. The wine is aged on its lees (spent yeast) for an extended period, giving Champagne its rich, complex flavors and fine mousse.

Grape Varieties

Champagne is typically made from a blend of three grape varieties:

  • Chardonnay (adds freshness and elegance)
  • Pinot Noir (brings body and structure)
  • Pinot Meunier (enhances fruitiness)

Sparkling Wine: The Global Contender

Sparkling wine is a broad category encompassing any bubbly wine made outside of Champagne.

From Italian Prosecco to Spanish Cava to California Brut, sparkling wines offer a range of styles and price points to fit any occasion.

Production Methods

Unlike Champagne, many sparkling wines use different techniques for carbonation:

  • Tank Method (Charmat Method): Used in Prosecco, this method allows the second fermentation to occur in stainless steel tanks rather than bottles, resulting in fresher, fruitier flavors.
  • Traditional Method: Used in Cava and some high-end California sparklers, mirroring Champagne’s process for added depth and complexity.
  • Carbonation: Some lower-end sparkling wines simply inject CO₂, much like soda, creating large bubbles that don’t last as long.

Got that?

Regional Varieties

  • Prosecco (Italy): Light, fruity, made from Glera grapes
  • Cava (Spain): Dry, crisp, made with Macabeo, Parellada, and Xarel-lo grapes
  • American Sparkling Wines (US): Varying styles, often using traditional Champagne grapes

Which One Should You Choose?

It all depends on the occasion and your taste preferences, and which bottle looks the coolest.

  • For elegance and complexity: Champagne is your go-to.
  • For something light and easy-drinking: Prosecco is a great pick.
  • For a budget-friendly, Champagne-like experience: Cava is an excellent choice.
  • For supporting local wineries: Try American sparkling wines.

At the end of the day, all sparkling wines have their charm. Whether you’re toasting with authentic Champagne or sipping on a delicious Prosecco, one thing is certain—life is better with bubbles.

🍾 SHAMELESS PLUG ALERT 🍾

This is a perfect hotel welcome gift, as a token of your appreciation, or just to be really really nice. The History of Baby Showers: From Silver Spoons to Registries

A baby shower is the only party where it’s socially acceptable to gift someone an alarming number of diapers.

This beloved tradition, celebrating expectant parents with gifts, unsolicited advice, and an excessive amount of pastel-colored décor, has a rich history that stretches back centuries. While modern baby showers involve themed decorations and games that may or may not induce mild embarrassment, their origins are much deeper (and, thankfully, involve fewer baby food taste tests).

Ancient Traditions

Celebrating pregnancy and new life is nothing new—our ancestors were on it long before Etsy and registry lists existed.

In ancient Egypt and Greece, childbirth was considered a major event, often tied to religious and cultural customs. Instead of playing “Guess the Baby Food,” expectant mothers participated in sacred rituals for blessings and guidance.

Meanwhile, the Romans—never ones to pass up a social gathering—gifted symbolic items to the mother post-birth, bestowing good fortune for both baby and parents.

The Middle Ages and Renaissance

Who could forget the Middle Ages, a time when pregnancy was about as publicized as a top-secret royal scandal.

Due to high infant mortality rates, there were no grand celebrations before birth. But by the Renaissance, when things started getting a little fancier, new mothers were honored with post-birth gatherings featuring gifts of silver spoons, handcrafted linens, and lots of questionable parenting advice from relatives.

The Victorian Era

Fast forward to the 19th century, when baby celebrations became more refined, because, of course, the Victorians made everything a little more proper.

Instead of raucous parties, expectant mothers were treated to genteel tea parties where they were showered with small gifts and an abundance of opinions on motherhood.

The term “baby shower” hadn’t been coined yet, but the tradition of presenting new parents with gifts in the name of good parenting was well on its way.

The 20th Century Boom

The modern baby shower as we know it took off in the post-World War II baby boom.

With a surplus of babies on the way and a growing consumer culture, friends and family members organized showers replete with games, gift-giving, and socializing—essentially a party where the mom-to-be sits in a chair and awkwardly opens presents while everyone watches.

Baby registries became a thing so that no one received twelve baby blankets and zero bottles.

Baby Showers Today

Today’s baby showers come in all shapes and sizes, much like the guests’ opinions on proper parenting.

From gender reveals to co-ed celebrations, virtual showers, and even “sip and see” parties after the baby arrives, the options are endless. Despite the evolution of traditions, the heart of the baby shower remains the same: celebrating the joy of new life and supporting soon-to-be parents as they brace for sleep deprivation and an existence suddenly ruled by an eight-pound dictator.

So whether you’re attending a classic baby shower or a modern twist on the tradition, just remember: bring a useful gift, avoid asking overly personal questions, and under no circumstances should you ever suggest that a baby name is “interesting.”

👶 SHAMELESS PLUG ALERT 👶

Of course, we wouldn’t write a blog post about baby showers without recommending the best baby shower gift ever. Our Baby’s Layette is built in an adorable wooden crate and cooing with baby essentials like My First Teddy Bear, Two receiving blankets, Two burp cloths, Two bibs

Two pairs of socks, and a Hooded towel. The enhanced version also includes a second hooded towel, Two board books, Crinkle cloth, and a Onesie.

It’s your time to shine as the talk of the baby shower town.

From the Heart: How to Choose a Meaningful Get-Well Gift

“I enjoy being stuck in bed with a fever and chills,” said no one ever.

Being sick stinks, so sending a thoughtful get-well gift can make a world of difference. A “Heal quickly” balloon won’t cut it.

Below, you’ll find ideas to help you pick out a gift that offers genuine comfort and maybe even a chuckle along the way.

Personalize, Don’t Genericize

If you really want to avoid generic gifts that scream “I picked this up last-minute,” consider what your under-the-weather recipient actually likes.

Sudoku puzzles, gourmet chocolates, or even that cult-classic novel they’ve been meaning to read all count as thoughtful ideas. When you tailor your gift to the infirmed’s hobbies, it shows you’ve given it more than a fleeting thought.

Comfort Is King

Comfort-based gifts rule the get-well realm. Plush socks, blankets, or basically anything that makes them feel warm and fuzzy (literally) will be a huge hit.

If you want to be extra fancy, throw in an aromatherapy diffuser to transform their sick-bed into a mini spa. Because when you’re under the weather, smelling lavender instead of cough syrup is already a significant upgrade.

The Gift of Actual Help

Here’s a no-wrapping-paper-required gift: lending a helping hand.

Offering to do their laundry, handle the groceries, or drop off a home-cooked meal will make you Thoughtful friend/relative/service-provider #1.

Trust us, eliminating one more chore is like sprinkling fairy dust on someone’s recovery. Just make sure you have hand sanitizer at the ready.

Boost Their Spirit

Being laid up can take a toll on the psyche.

That’s where a little emotional support comes in. Slide in a handwritten card brimming with sarcastic but supportive one-liners, or set them up with an audiobook subscription so they can escape into another world.

Or you can be the most awesome version of yourself and create a playlist of their favorite tunes; it’s a small touch that can make them feel less isolated and bored.

Keep It Real

At the end of the day, the best gifts come from a place of authentic concern, not a last-minute gas station pit stop.

While you might be tempted to overdo it with glitter and giggles, sometimes a simple message that says, “We miss you, but you’re not missing out because you still look fabulous!” can work wonders.

Combine sincerity with a dash of wit, and you’ll have a get-well package that’ll leave them smiling.

😌 SHAMLESS PLUG ALERT 😌

Now, if you really want to lift up someone who’s feeling lousy, send them a hug with our Be Well Gift Basket. Built on a distressed wood chalkboard tray, this healing offering features Aloe infused socks, Eco plant based mug, Buddah board, Blanket, J&M cookies, Joolies, Nuts, Tea bags, and more.

Let the recovery begin!

Burn Brightly: Why Candles Are Good for Your Mind and Body

Did you know that candles do more than just light, smell good, and sometimes try to conceal embarrassing odors?

Yes, candles have long been associated with relaxation and ambiance, but their benefits extend far beyond creating a cozy atmosphere. These wax wonders can positively impact your mental and physical well-being in surprising ways.

Here’s why adding candles to your daily routine could be one of the simplest yet most effective self-care decisions you make.

A Relaxation Remedy

Lighting a candle can have an immediate calming effect.

The gentle flicker of the flame coupled with soothing scents can make you feel like you’re starring in a Bath & Body Works brochure. They also signal to your brain that it’s time to unwind.

Aromatherapy candles, in particular, are infused with essential oils like lavender, chamomile, or eucalyptus, which are known to reduce stress and anxiety.

Even the act of lighting a candle can serve as a mindful moment in your day, helping you feel more grounded.

Who doesn’t want that?

Boost Your Mood

Certain scents are directly tied to emotions.

For example, citrus fragrances like lemon or orange can energize and uplift your mood, while vanilla is often associated with comfort and happiness…and bourbon.

Lighting a scented candle during stressful or busy moments may elevate your mood.

Support Better Sleep

Candles can play a role in creating a pre-sleep ritual.

Turning off harsh overhead lights and lighting a candle in the evening helps signal to your body that it’s time to wind down. This soft, warm glow mimics natural lighting conditions that promote melatonin production, which is essential for good sleep.

Just be sure to blow out the candle so you don’t burn the place down.

Create a Sense of Space

Ever wanted to create a popup sanctuary? You can with candles!

Whether you’re taking a bath, working from home, or enjoying a quiet evening with a book, lighting a candle can make the space feel more intentional. This is particularly helpful for small apartments or shared spaces, where creating a sense of personal retreat can be challenging.

Enhance Focus and Creativity

In a world of constant distractions, candles can also help you concentrate.

Scents like rosemary or peppermint are believed to improve focus and cognitive function. Placing a candle on your desk while working or studying can set the mood for productivity, keeping you locked in and on task.

Whether you use candles to relax, recharge, or refocus, their simple presence can bring light into both your home and your life.

Aloe Vera: Nature’s Health Powerhouse

We tend to think of aloe vera only when we turn red as lobsters from sunburns and when choosing which type of tissues and toilet paper we want touching our skin.

Don’t get me wrong, it helps with those, AND it’s a powerhouse of health benefits wrapped in thick, green leaves. From skin care to digestion, aloe has been a trusted remedy for centuries, and for good reason.

This little botanical gem is bursting with nutrients that contribute to overall well-being in a variety of ways.

Want to learn how? You bet you do.

Skin Soothing Superstar

As mentioned above, one of the most well-known benefits of aloe is its ability to calm irritated skin.

Whether dealing with sunburn, minor cuts, or general dryness, aloe gel is packed with antioxidants (hey, our favorite word!) and vitamins like A, C, and E. These work to moisturize and reduce inflammation. The cooling sensation aloe provides isn’t just for show—it helps relieve discomfort while promoting faster healing.

People with chronic skin conditions, such as eczema or psoriasis, often turn to aloe-based products to reduce redness and itchiness. Since the plant’s gel is naturally hydrating, it adds a layer of moisture without clogging pores, making it suitable for almost all skin types.

A Digestive Boost

Did you know you can eat aloe…without wringing it out of tissues?

Consuming aloe juice can support digestive health by soothing the lining of the stomach and intestines. This can be helpful for those who experience occasional heartburn or indigestion. Aloe’s natural compounds assist in breaking down food more effectively, which may lead to improved nutrient absorption.

It also contains enzymes that promote the breakdown of sugars and fats, making the digestive process smoother. Some even find that aloe acts as a gentle, natural laxative that keeps things moving without harsh side effects.

Immunity Enhancer

Aloe vera is rich in polysaccharides (gesundheit!), compounds that play a role in supporting immune function.

By encouraging the production of white blood cells, aloe can help the body respond better to threats like infections and viruses. Additionally, its antiviral and antibacterial properties provide an extra layer of defense against common illnesses.

Oral Health Helper

Aloe’s benefits extend to your mouth as well.

Using aloe-based mouthwashes can reduce plaque buildup and gum inflammation. Its antimicrobial properties target bacteria that contribute to bad breath and cavities, promoting overall dental health without the use of harsh chemicals.

Easy to Incorporate

Adding aloe to your daily routine doesn’t require much effort.

Use the gel directly from the plant for skin application, or pick up aloe drinks and supplements from health food stores. Whether applied topically or taken internally, aloe’s wide range of benefits makes it a valuable addition to any wellness regimen.

Oh, lest you think aloe comes from cacti, it’s actually a succulent and member of the lily family. Feel free to use that information to impress people at your next aloe-infused cocktail party.

🌿 SHAMELESS PLUG 🌿

We are your aloe hookup. Our Be Well Gift Basket, built in a lovely distressed wood chalkboard tray, features Aloe infused socks, Eco plant based mug, Buddah board, Blanket, J&M cookies, Joolies, Nuts, Tea bags, and more!

The 2025 Gifting Game Plan: Calendars, Budgets, and Zero Last-Minute Panic

Gift-giving doesn’t have to feel like an extreme sport.

In fact, with a little planning, you can conquer 2025 without a single frantic shopping spree.

Let’s break down how to plan ahead, keep your budget in check, and save yourself from those frantic, last-minute online shopping marathons.

This may require a spreadsheet or two.

Calendar First, Shop Second

The easiest way to avoid panic is to know what’s coming.

Start by grabbing a calendar (digital or good old-fashioned paper) and marking every important date: birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, and any “just because” occasions.

Next, add reminders a month or two ahead of each major event. This way, instead of realizing your best friend’s birthday is tomorrow, you’ll have a cozy buffer to brainstorm something thoughtful.

I know this may go against every grain of living the procrastinator’s life, but embrace the change!

Budget Like a Pro

Gifting doesn’t have to equal debt.

Set a clear budget for each occasion right from the start. It doesn’t need to be complicated—just list the event and how much you’re comfortable spending. Be honest with yourself.

To avoid those December meltdowns, start a “Gift Fund” now. Toss a little money into it each month. By the time the holiday season rolls around, you’ll already have a stash ready to go.

Future You will be eternally grateful.

Keep a Gift List

Ever been struck by inspiration in July for the perfect December gift?

Write it down! Keep a running list (your phone’s notes app works wonders) of ideas for each person in your life. This way, when the time comes, you’re not starting from scratch.

Pro tip: If you see something on sale that screams your mom’s name, buy it early and stash it away. You’ll thank yourself later.

Batch Your Shopping

Dedicate specific times of the year to knocking out multiple gifts at once.

Think mid-summer sales or Black Friday for holiday shopping. This saves time, money, and mental energy.

Bonus: Group gifting works, too. Chip in with family or friends for bigger gifts—it lightens the financial load.

Organize and Declutter

Sometimes the best way to prepare for gifting seasons is to organize what you already have.

Open your office closet and take stock of wrapping paper, gift bags, cards, and moth balls well in advance. Set aside a space to keep all your gift supplies so you’re not scrambling to find tape at the last minute. Having an organized system reduces stress and makes the gifting process feel effortless.

🚨 SHAMELESS PLUG ALERT 🚨

Add this one to the top of your list: our Cookies & Cocoa Gift Basket. This gorgeous gift is wrapped in buffalo plaid and features Cocoa Lover’s gift box, Full size bag of Fireside marshmallows, Flathaus snaps shortbread cookies, and Pirouline wafer rolls

Happy gifting!

What’s the Story Behind Hanukkah Dishes?

Time for a history lesson:

Hanukkah commemorates the Maccabean Revolt, during which the Jewish people reclaimed and rededicated the Temple in Jerusalem after it had been desecrated by the Greek-Syrian Seleucid Empire. The central miracle of the story lies in a small supply of oil found in the Temple—only enough to keep the menorah lit for one day. Remarkably, the oil burned for eight days, inspiring the eight-day celebration of Hanukkah. Each night, candles on the menorah are lit to honor this extraordinary event and its enduring significance.

What does this have to do with food?

It’s all about the oil, and this miracle is why oil plays a starring role in Hanukkah cuisine, giving us the delicious, golden-fried treats we look forward to every year.

Latkes: A Crispy Celebration

Latkes—pronounced lat-kiss or lat-kees (this one’s cuter)—are one of the most iconic Hanukkah dishes.

These crispy potato pancakes are fried and symbolize the oil used in the temple’s menorah. The tradition of eating latkes dates back centuries, with roots in Eastern Europe. While the classic potato version reigns supreme, modern takes include sweet potato, zucchini, and even cheesy latkes.

Pair them with sour cream or applesauce, and you’ve got a Hanukkah staple that’s hard to resist.

Sufganiyot: The Sweet Side of Tradition

If latkes are the savory star, sufganiyot (Gesundheit!) are the sweet scene-stealers.

These fluffy, deep-fried donuts are a beloved treat in Jewish households worldwide. The filling varies—traditionalists stick with jelly, while others embrace custard, chocolate, or even trendy flavors like salted caramel. Like latkes, sufganiyot are fried in oil, keeping the miracle of Hanukkah alive with every bite, baby!

Brisket and Beyond

It’s not a Jewish holiday without brisket.

While fried foods take center stage, Hanukkah meals often feature hearty, slow-cooked dishes like brisket. This tender, flavorful cut of beef is a classic at Jewish holiday tables and reflects the communal aspect of Hanukkah. Brisket is the culinary equivalent of a slow burn—it takes hours to perfect, but the payoff is worth every minute.

If you do indeed burn it, then you’ve ruined Hanukkah.

Gelt and Dreidels

No Hanukkah meal is complete without chocolate gelt. These coin-shaped chocolates, often wrapped in shiny gold foil, represent the coins historically given to children as part of the holiday.

Paired with a game of dreidel, gelt adds a playful and sweet finish to the festivities…until your kids start fighting because big sister keeps spinning a gimel, the winning letter, and little brother insists the game is rigged.

🕎 SHAMELESS PLUG ALERT 🕎

We talked about everything but Hanukkah gifts, which are also sort of central to the holiday. Don’t fret, because we’ve got a good one: our Kosher Hanukkah Gift Basket, featuring Fatty Sunday chocolate dipped pretzels, Destrooper cookies, Peanut brittle, Tea Forte, Magnolia Bakery banana pudding cookies, Lindt balls, and Chocolate coins.

Happy Hanukkah!

What Is The Secret Santa Origin Story?

Secret Santa is a holiday tradition that has brought equal parts joy, humor, and mild anxiety (what do you buy for Bob in accounting?) to workplaces, families, and friend groups for decades.

If you haven’t participated in one yet, you are missing out on the most quirky and funny of gift exchanges.

But how did it all start?

Lucky for you, we are sleuths over here at BasketWorks, and we’ve gotten to the bottom of Secret Santa.

A Tradition Rooted in Generosity

The exact origins of Secret Santa are a bit murky, but the spirit of anonymous giving dates back centuries.

One of the earliest inspirations comes from Saint Nicholas himself. The 4th-century bishop, known for his secret acts of kindness—like leaving coins in shoes or rescuing families in need—set the tone for the anonymous generosity we associate with modern-day Secret Santa.

Fast forward to the mid-20th century, when the practice began to take shape as a group activity. Some say it started in Scandinavia, where “Julklapp” (or “Christmas knock”) involved leaving gifts on doorsteps, knocking, and running away before being seen.

Others trace it to the United States, where it gained traction as a creative way to exchange gifts without breaking the bank or leaving anyone out.

The Modern Secret Santa

The Secret Santa we know today—where participants draw names to determine whom they’ll buy a gift for—was popularized by workplace gift exchanges.

The goal? To add a touch of fun and reduce the stress (and expense) of buying gifts for everyone in the office.

A significant boost to its popularity came from philanthropist Larry Dean Stewart in the 1970s. Stewart, known as the “original Secret Santa,” anonymously handed out $100 bills to strangers in need during the holiday season. His generosity inspired others to embrace anonymous giving, creating a wave of kindness during the holidays that continues today.

Aww.

Why We Love It

It’s equal parts strategy, luck, and good old-fashioned chaos, making it the perfect way to inject some energy into holiday traditions.

Whether it’s a funny gag gift or something heartfelt, Secret Santa has a way of bringing people together and celebrating the true spirit of the holidays: thoughtfulness, kindness, a sense of community, and walking away the winner because you drew the air fryer.

🧙‍♂️ SHAMLESS PLUG ALERT 🧙‍♂️

Never mind the air fryer, if you were to receive our Gnome for the Holidays Gift Basket, they would erect statues of you wherever Secret Santa is played. This gem starts with a hyacinth basket, accented with a Gnome theme ribbon, and features: Gnome cookie jar; Plush Gnome ornament; Gnome Nog mix; Gnome cocoa mix; Walker’s shortbread; Magnolia Bakery banana pudding cookie, and more.

It’s time to get your gnome on!
